New Police Non-Emergency Number

Please note that as from Tuesday 8 November 2011 there will be a new Police Non-Emergency Number 101. Calls to 101 will cost 15p per call, no matter how long you are on the phone, this applies to both landlines and mobile phones.  For the first time, everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters will know exactly how much the call will cost them and will be assured of equal access whether they are on a pay-as-you-go mobile or a home landline. 

In an emergency, the public should continue to call 999, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.

The current number (0300 333 3000) will continue to operate as a general switchboard number which should be used to speak to a particular person or a department.

Information from Shropshire Council Waste Management

I am writing to tell you that unfortunately cardboard can no longer be put in garden waste bins or sacks. This change was approved at Cabinet today and will affect all households in the Shropshire Council area.

Why is it changing?

Recent changes to national composting regulations mean that any compost produced across the UK must now be of a much higher quality. This new standard is called PAS 100:2011.

The new rules mean that compost can no longer contain cardboard because the inks, dyes and coatings on cardboard may contaminate the compost.

Compost producers will no longer accept garden waste and cardboard that is mixed together. This means, regrettably, we will no longer be able to collect cardboard for composting.

What happens next?

To inform householders of this change, a leaflet will be put under the lids of all rubbish bins from the 31 October 2011. A permanent sticker will then be put on garden waste bin lids to act as a reminder to residents not to put cardboard in.

When will the change start?

Residents will no longer be able to put cardboard in their garden waste bin (or sack) from Monday 28 November 2011.

What will residents do with their cardboard now?

We will ask householders to continue to recycle their cardboard by taking it, if they are able, to their nearest Household Recycling Centre. Otherwise we will be advising them to put their cardboard waste in their rubbish bin. Veolia are also looking for suitable sites around the county to place approximately 20 bring banks for cardboard .

What happens if residents put cardboard in their garden waste bins (or sacks) after 28 November?

If cardboard is in garden waste bins (or sacks) after 28 November Veolia will not be able to empty it. After this date, if cardboard is mixed in, entire loads of garden waste would be rejected at the composting facility and it would then have to be sent to landfill. Residents will get a bin hanger which explains why their bin has not been emptied and what they should do.

The future

We are working with Veolia to find new practical and cost effective ways of collecting cardboard in the future to make sure that we continue to recycle as much of our waste as possible.

Trading Standards Services in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin

The Trading Standards Services in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin operate a Trader Register Scheme for small  home improvement traders in the area.

The Register was launched in 2007 and we have almost 500 local members.

The Scheme was developed because of concerns from the public about rogue traders and some people simply didn't know where to start to appoint a tradesperson they could trust.  Businesses who apply for the scheme are checked out by Trading Standards and other members of the Steering Group.

All members have signed up to a strict code of practice and agree to work with Trading Standards in the unlikely event of a dispute.

Our registered traders cover a wide range of home improvements from large building works to small jobs such as fixing a leaky tap.

It is very easy to find a trader - you can either search on the website at www.traderregister.org.uk or telephone our call centre on 0345 678 9000. A representative will do the search and post out the results.

We feel that this is a really valuable service for the local community.  In the current economic climate we are seeing an increase in the number of complaints about rogue traders and would like to see more people using the Trader Register.

Bayston Hill to go Low Carbon

At a recent Full Council Meeting it was agreed to that Bayston Hill would aim to become a low carbon Parish - hoping to reduce our carbon emissions by 35% of over the next five years.    This is a similar to target to Shropshire Council and will involve various initiatives both large and small.  We shall also need the help of everyone in the Parish if we are to achieve that target and contribute towards reducing the impact of climate change

Solar Panels

If you are contemplating solar panels in the roof of your house you may be interested in a website that is available to give you advice and guidance.  This will help you understand for example, planning permission or building regulations before you have them installed.  The website is www.planningportal.gov.uk.  Once you are on the page go over to the right hand corner under 'Guidance' click on 'Interactive House'.  Once the house is downloaded click on 'Launch The Guide' and you will be able to click on the solar panels on the roof of the house and read all the advice and guidance on installing solar panels.  __________________________________________________________________________________________

Bayston Hill Library

We have received a slight change to the opening hours of Bayston Hill Library. At the beginning of December 2010 the Library will open all day on a Tuesday rather than closing for lunch and tea which means increasing the opening hours by 1.5 hours a week.  The change is in response to customer comments and the aim is to provide a more convenient service whenever we can.  Occasionally it may mean that the library will have to close for lunch and tea, if it is single staffed due to sickness or leave, but they will avoid this whenever possible.

The revised opening hours will be:-

Monday - Closed.

Tuesday - 10am - 7.30pm

Wednesday - Closed.

Thursday - 10am - 1pm - 2pm - 5pm

Friday - 10am - 1pm - 2pm - 5pm

Saturday - 9.30am - 1pm
