Bridgnorth Low Town Action Group

Registered Charity No. 110950

Low Town is generally considered to be a low lying area around the river and all of Bridgnorth on the eastern side of the river.

For hundreds of years, it was the commercial and industrial hub of the area, with the river Severn being the major highway for the transportation of goods.  Even in the 1970s there was a carpet factory and an electrical goods factory by the river that employed hundreds of people.  In recent years industry has moved away from the riverside, to be replaced by housing.

In 2003, the Low Town area of Bridgnorth, with the agreement and support of Bridgnorth District Council, was one of 5 towns selected by the Royal Institute of British Architects for a pilot study to produce a 'Local Design Statement'.  This initiative led to the formation of Low Town Action Group, whose remit is to 'improve the working and living conditions of the people of Low Town, Bridgnorth'.  The 'Low Town Design Statement' was finally published in September, 2004.

Currently, we hold a meeting in the Low Town Community Hall, Severn Street, every two months, which is open to all residents of Low Town, and anyone else interested in the area.  There is no membership as such and no subscription fee.  All those attending can join in all discussions, and raise any subject relevant to the area.

If need be, we will contact the local councils, other statutory bodies and organisations, to put forward and represent the views of our members.

Among our achievements is the conception and nurturing in its early years the creation of the replica of Trevithick's 'catch me who can' locomotive, and the planning for the 2008 bi-centenary celebration of it's manufacture.  This activity was subsequently transferred into a separate Trevithick 200 organisation.  For the future, we anticipate setting up other projects which will be of benefit to Low Town, and Bridgnorth.  Further details will be published shortly.  Anyone interested in being involved in any way would be most welcome.
