CONDOVER BROADBAND SPEED - ARE YOU SATISFIED?
BY CLLR DAVID LANE
Living or working in Condover I guess that you are just like me and can't get a decent Broadband speed. Apparently the solution for this is a new fibre optic cable connecting the village and the exchange at either Dorrington or Bayston Hill. This can be easily done as Shropshire Council have just received a grant of £8,200,000 to upgrade the broadband network in the County. Taking 5 minutes out of your day to fill in a survey at www.connectingshropshire.com is the first, easiest step we can take to ensure that our village gets the broadband upgrade which we need.
If you can also please encourage your friends/neighbours in the village to fill out the survey and do the same then this puts us in a better position and closer to getting a faster broadband.

CHANGES TO RECYCLING CARDBOARD
There has been a change to the way recycling works for households in the Shropshire area. The change is that you are no longer allowed put cardboard in garden waste bins or garden waste sacks. This change is as a result of new composting regulations as the chemicals and inks in the cardboard can contaminate the compost and producers of compost will not accept garden waste and cardboard which has been mixed. If it were to be mixed in, entire loads of garden waste would be rejected and entire loads would be sent to landfill!
With effect from Monday 28th November 2011, your garden waste will no longer be accepted or taken away if it has cardboard in it and a note will be left alongside your bin explaining why it hasn‟t been emptied.
You can still recycle your cardboard though, by taking it to your nearest Household Recycling Centre, otherwise, if you are unable to do this, you‟re advised to simply put your cardboard in the normal rubbish bin.
A leaflet is to be put under the lips of all rubbish bins and a permanent sticker will be put on garden waste bin lids as a reminder to residents to put be tempted to put cardboard in their green bin.

CORE ENERGY CHAMPION ROLE - by Adam Jones
National Energy Action, the national fuel poverty charity is currently working on a number of projects to deliver energy efficiency advice to the more vulnerable within society in order to reduce their energy consumption, alleviate fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions. Within Shropshire this work is being partnered with the Community Council of Shropshire (Clive Leworthy).
As I am sure you are aware the current levels of fuel poverty are at an all time high. There are 26.9% of households in Shropshire in fuel poverty. With the recent price rises it is now essential that advice is given to these households in order to reduce their energy consumption and ensure they can achieve affordable warmth.
Over the forthcoming months we are running the CORE project (Calor Off gas Rural Energy champions), which will provide assistance to fuel-poor households via front line organisations to enable them to deliver simple, practical advice to people in rural communities. Please see attached document for further details (Energy Champion Role).
Currently I am obtaining levels of interest from a number of organisations to attend an awareness event at Craven Arms Community centre on the 8th December 2011. This event will be a two hour event starting at 10:00 and lunch will be provided upon completion. The event is limited to 12 attendees with one attendee from each region being given the opportunity to go forward and obtain a City & Guilds qualification in energy efficiency. If you are interested in taking part in the project and could attend the local awareness event, please contact me to confirm your interest (expression of interest form attached).

THE BIG TREE PLANT FOR SHROPSHIRE
You may have heard about the government's national tree planting campaign - The Big Tree Plant ( http://thebigtreeplant.direct.gov.uk/index.html ). Shropshire Council, in partnership with Shrewsbury Town Council, is running one of only three projects in the west midlands area to have received
Big Tree Plant funds. We have been awarded up to £32,500 for our four year project, subject to successful delivery in the first year.
The money is to be used to supply and plant larger 'standard' size trees in streets and public open space, within the urban environment. We also aim to create small areas of community woodland (half a hectare maximum size), for example in parks, wildlife sites and school grounds.
The first year of the project (2011 - March 2012) is focussing on Shrewsbury, but the following three years (April 2012 - March 2015) we want to extend the project across all Shropshire's market towns. Over the next four years we aim to plant a total of 550 large street trees and create a total of 10ha of community woodlands.
The purpose of this letter is to bring our Big Tree Plant project to your attention and to invite you to take part. We are looking for local council partners across Shropshire who would like to join in and plant some trees. Please contact me for more details and to discuss how we might be able to make your town a little bit greener. I can be reached by telephone on 01743 252422 or email: martin.sutton@shropshire.gov.uk
