Hinstock WI
Report of meeting held on 8th October 2009Clarice welcomed everyone to the October meeting and thanked Debbie for standing in as Secretary in Sue's absence. Apologies received from Kay and Sue. Birthday posies were presented to Doreen, Maggie and Gwynneth. The minutes of the last meeting were read, agreed and signed. Sue would like to stand down as Secretary so we would gladly welcome new members on to the Committee - our meetings are very informal and full of laughter.
The trip to Birmingham on Tuesday, 20th October, will leave Hinstock at 2 p.m. for shopping in the city prior to seeing the opening night show at the Hippodrome of Scrooge with Tommy Steele at 7.30 p.m.
Clarice has provisionally booked to see Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat at the new Severn Theatre in Shrewsbury on May 12th next year for a matinee performance - tickets £20.50 for concessions, £22 adults - names in book please. Members indicated that the wine tasting evening at Waitrose in September was very enjoyable and interesting - we will send them a letter of thanks.
Operation Christmas Child - members were asked if they would like to support this worthy cause at Christmastime by filling shoe boxes with gifts for children in poverty abroad and members supported this whole heartedly. The boxes need to be wrapped in Christmas paper, but not the gifts inside as these have to be checked as certain items cannot be sent. The boxes will be collected on 16th November, so will members please bring them to the November meeting.
The Committee have decided that as from next year the winner of the competition cup will also receive free membership (worth £29 .50p) for the following year. Hopefully this will encourage more members to enter the competition each month. Our speaker tonight was Trish Dawson talking about Isabella - the life and times of Mrs Beeton, who she portrayed as a very independent and forward looking woman of that era. Tragically Mrs Beeton died at the young age of 28 after having two babies die, one at 3 months and one at 3 years, then giving birth to a son and finally a daughter, but dying shortly after that birth. The competition for an old cookery book was won by Joyce.
At our November meeting on Thursday the 12th our speaker will be John Jepson who is going to demonstrate "Watercolour Painting", and the competition is for an original watercolour painting. Visitors will be most welcome and our supper will be provided by Maggie and Sheila, washing up to be done by Carol Maidment and Ann Walgrove.
We look forward to seeing you. Don't forget the shoe boxes!
Clarice Jepson
