Diamond Jubilee Celebrations ... |
Posted 29th March 2012
I wonder if you will be kind enough to help me. I am writing a book on the Home Front in South Shropshire 1914-1918 and one of the sources I am using is Parish magazines. Do you know if one was produced for Hopesay Parish at this period of time and if so where I may read the relevant copies?
Among the topics that I am interested in is local recruitment, the making of comforts for troops, local nursing of the wounded (there was a VAD hospital at Aston Hall, Aston-on-Clun), parcels for POW's, the housing of Belgian refugees, the Land Army and the help given to soldiers who returned maimed either physically or mentally. If you know of any local family that have stories to tell or photographs that I can use that will be marvellous.
Any help at all that you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
(Dr) Derek Beattie

SPEED CHECKS on the B4368 at Aston on Clun ...
On behalf of the Parish Council following requests from residents, Shropshire Council recently recorded traffic speeds over a period of 7 days up to Wednesday 18 January and have given a very quick run-down of the results as follows:
In the centre, by the Kangeroo, traffic is travelling at average speeds of 28 - 29mph, with 85 percent travelling at speeds of less than 33mph. This demonstrates a good level of observance.
At the Clun end, we have average speeds of 31 - 33mph, with 85 percent travelling at speeds of less than 37mph, again a good level of observance.
At the Craven Arms end, we have average speeds of 36 - 37mph, with 85 percent travelling at speeds of 41 - 43mph. This is obviously where we need to concentrate our efforts.
The Parish Council will be meeting with Shropshire Council to discuss ways of reducing speeds in particular at the Craven Arms end of the B4368 by which time a full analysis of the results will be available.

101 - police non-emergency number ... If it is NOT an emergency ... 101 is the new number to call when you want to speak to your local police to report less urgent crime and disorder and for general police enquiries. For example:
In an emergency ... In an emergency, always call 999. An emergency is when:
See letter below ... I am writing to inform you about steps we have taken to make it easier for the public to contact their local police force. From Tuesday 8th November 2011, communities across West Mercia will have access to 101, the national non-emergency telephone number for the police service in England and Wales. While 999 is a well-recognised number used to report emergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only 54% of the public know how to contact their local police if they want to talk to them about policing, crime or anti-social behaviour. The introduction of the 101 number will help communities to keep their neighbourhoods safe by giving them one easy way to contact their local police force to report non-emergency crime and disorder. The number is already in use in Wales, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and Sheffield, but it is now being rolled out across England on a phased basis during 2011. We know from the experience of these initial areas that 101 is well received by the public and has led to improvements in public satisfaction and confidence when calling the police. Further information can be obtained by visiting www.police.uk/101 Calls to 101 will cost 15 pence per call, no matter how long you are on the phone - this applies to both landlines and mobile phones. For the first time, everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters will know exactly how much the call will cost them and will be assured of equal access whether they are on a pay-as-you-go mobile or a home landline. In an emergency, the public should continue to call 999, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened. Our current number (0300 333 3000) will continue to operate as a general switchboard number which should be used to speak to a particular person or a department. I would be grateful if you could assist in promoting this valuable service to members of the public in your area. Warm Home Discount information ... Confusion has arisen over the Governments' new Warm Homes Discount. Customers have been calling the energy companies trying to find out who is eligible and therefore will qualify for £120 off their electricity bill this winter. Most of the money will be distributed automatically but for some eligible customers the discount will only be available 'first come, first served'. Pensioners in receipt of the guarantee element of Pension Credit should receive their discount automatically without having to take any action. They will receive a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions to say that their electricity bill will be credited with £120. Some other households may also qualify, but the funds are limited. These customers do need to apply to their energy company. Each company has slightly different criteria for deciding who can have a payment. In broad terms they are looking for customers who receive a means-tested benefit and have a child under 5 or who also receive a disability benefit. Ian Peters, managing director of energy at British Gas, told Radio 4's Money Box programme that no eligible customer would lose out if they apply before the end of January. Other companies are, currently, not making such a generous offer. Shropshire residents unsure who to call should contact Keep Shropshire Warm on 01743 277123. Keep Shropshire Warm also urges all customers that have not already done so to make sure their homes are fully insulated ready for winter. At present we can offer loft and cavity wall insulation from as little as £89 each and free to those over 70 or in receipt of qualifying benefits. Become a Shropshire Council Volunteer Flood Monitor! ...
Shropshire Council is taking a new approach to the management of local flood risk. We are gaining local knowledge, and providing feedback, through our programme of Flood Forums and are using this information to identify areas at significant risk.
Whilst we, and our strategic partners, regularly inspect and maintain our drainage assets we recognise that problems can arise between routine inspections.
To help us increase the frequency of inspections at critical points on the drainage network, we are seeking volunteers from local communities who would like to act as Flood Monitors.
Flood Monitors will help Shropshire Council, and other organisations with flood risk responsibilities, by providing additional information on the status of the drainage network.
This will be done by: a non technical inspection at key 'points of interest', such as locations that are known to have reoccurring problems; and, a phone call or email to Shropshire Council to report an issue.
As a volunteer Flood Monitor, you will be designated a number of points of interest in your local area. Your inspections will not require any specialist knowledge or training and will not involve any type of maintenance. All inspections will be from areas already accessible to the general public and a brief induction meeting will be held to explain to volunteers what is required.
Upon receipt of a Flood Monitor report, whether via phone or email, the issue will be forwarded to the relevant organisation for action.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer Flood Monitor, please contact your local Town or Parish Council, who will forward on your name.
