AN ARCTIC START TO A NEW DECADE

A new decade began with The Big Freeze.  The Stiperstones landscape took on a stunning new look with significant snowfall and an Arctic grip.  This Janiary 07 2010 picture shows the approach to Crows Nest, with the Old Cross Guns nestling at the foot of the bank on the left.

65 years on...tribute is paid to the lost airmen of Mytton Dingle

It's Sunday November 22 2009...and 65 years after five airmen died when their Whitley bomber crashed into the

hillside in Mytton Dingle, a memorial plaque was unveiled.  The plaque was made possible after a successful

Village Hall fund-raising effort by Peter and Julia Francis, pictured above on the left after the unveiling.

The commanding officer of RAF Shawbury was present but the honour of unveiling the plaque (right) went to Senior Aircraftman Duncan Macdonald, who grew up in Stiperstones not far from the site.

MEMORIES WITH THE FFEISTY FFELTERS
The Ffeisty Ffelters, with members from all across Shropshire and the Border area, held a three-day workshop in the Village Hall from August 10-12 2009. They drew their inspiration from the Snailbeach setting and this stunning wall-hanging is one of the results. Called Faded Memories and evocative of the village's mining history, it is the work of Margaret Webb, from Stapleton (pictured left below) and Dee Highfield, from Great Ness.  The Ffeisty Felters' work was exhibited at a Bear Steps exhibition in Shrewsbury from November 22-December 05. The Ffelters used plants picked locally such as greater celandine, holly leaves, whinberries, wall lettuce and elder leaves, to make their own dies.  Jan Parry, from Annscroft, is pictured (centre) working with her whinberry dye.

FROM SNAILBEACH TO GLASTONBURY (VIA STIPERSTOCK)

Shrewsbury indie band 10KRunner have been weekend regulars at the Village Hall, using it as their rehearsal stage. They have also appeared at the local Stiperstock Festival.  But June 27 2009 saw them at a rather more prestigious gig when they were featured at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival.  The band, pictured here left to right, are Matt Davies, Ricky Brown, Dave Mason and Alan Birch and you can see and hear them at Glastonbury by clicking on this link:-

STIPERSTONES GETS THE FLAGS OUT FOR A STREET PARTY
 Street party

Glorious weather was the order of the day when Stiperstones held a street party on Sunday August 09 2009.  Street? The venue was actually the school. The organisers asked everyone to "bring yourselves, food, drink, chairs and a smile" and they put the flags out and did just that.

SNAILBEACH SWITCHES ON THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TO HELP OUR HEROES
 Christmas lights 1
The Snailbeach Christmas lights just get bigger and better.  For 2009 John and Ann Jones excelled themselves and this time their chosen charity was Help for Heroes. Donations totalled a magnificent £1020.50. The couple first set up their display more than 20 years ago when their children were small but each year it has expanded and has raised money for various charities.  Christmas lights 2  Christmas lights 6
