Complete List of all Public Rights of Way in West Felton Parish

The seventy-one public rights of way within the parish consist of 63 footpaths (FP), 7 bridleways (BW) and one possible byway open to all traffic (BOAT).  Until very recently (2002/2003) there were also roads used as public paths (RUPP) which were all classed as public rights of way.  Some signposts within the parish (and adjoining parishes) are still marked as RUPPs, usually with the words 'Public Right of Way' on the post.  There used to be four of these within West Felton parish (nos.53, 55, 62 and 73).  Three of these have now been reclassified.  Number 62 is a historical anomaly and has not so far been reclassified.  It seems likely that if this is ever formally reclassified it will become a BOAT.

Of the seven bridleways within the parish, only three of them are through routes - numbers 43, 55 and Hicksons Lane (which has not yet been given a number).  The other four are dead ends for horse riders.  Bicyclists are allowed to ride along bridleways, but must give way to horse riders and walkers.[1]

The total distance of all the rights of way within West Felton comes to around 19¼ miles (31 kilometres).

By law all public rights of way which leave a county-maintained road should be signposted.[2]  The vast majority of those within West Felton are signed.  Some continuous paths/ways have more than one number (for historical reasons) and the continuations will not be signposted.  Such continuous paths are noted in brackets following the way number.  Where signposts are currently not in place on county roads, this is noted.  And the vast majority of paths/ways are very well way-marked with arrows pointing from one stile/gate to the next.

The use of 'arable' (or 'cultivated') and 'pasture' is used below for certain fields.  There is nothing necessarily permanent about this usage.  Some arable land will sometimes be used as pasture during late autumn and winter.  Where this is known to happen it will be indicated by 'arableÿ'.  Conversely, some pasture may be converted to arable use, although this is uncommon in recent years within the parish.

Where an asterisk (*) follows a right of way number, this means that that particular right of way has not been surveyed within the past two years.  This is likely to be the case with several ways which no longer seem to serve any useful purpose.  The text in each case should help to identify these particular ways.

References to the 'County Council' are to the old Council (prior to 1st April 2009) and will mean that any correspondence/notifications will have been made before that date.  References to the 'definitive line' or the 'definitive map' are to the legal position under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.[3]  This is the line shown on Ordnance Survey maps.  The definitive line on maps is not always the right one.  Amendments to rights of way are continuously being made, and, even if the highways authority has notified changes to the Ordnance Survey, the changes take time to appear on maps.  It is probably better to follow directions on the ground when these are at variance to the line shown on the map.

Six-figure numbers to the right of way numbers are grid references for the start/finish points of each public right of way.

BRIDLEWAY NO. 9 (continuous with FP 14)                                                         365265/365273

The Bridleway starts at the driveway to Lilac Cottage, Grimpo, through a pair of small metal gates.  It passes over gravel and then grass and between two mature trees, before it leaves the boundaries of the Cottage through a wicket gate.  The way then runs along the edge of three fields.  It has a clearly defined track of grass and heard earth which is raised slightly above the level of the fields and has sloping edges.  The way passes through a gap, with a stile to the right, into the second field and through another gap (no stile) into the third field.  It ends at a stile at the top of the last field, close to the railway line, at the junction with FP 14.  Distance about 800 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 14 (continuous with BW 9)                                                          361273/365273

Starts from a stile on the road close to the Railway Bridge at Sutton.  It follows the edge of one field, with a wire fence and the railway line to its left, to a stile in the opposite corner of the same field, where it joins BW 9.  Distance about 470 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 15                                                                                                377269/387276

Starts from a stile on the road opposite to Pump House, Haughton, and goes at a slight angle to the right across a cultivated field towards a Waymarker post.  It crosses a ditch and then turns more sharply to the right across a cultivated field to a field gate.  From the field gate the path continues along a hedged track, with a stoned and hard earth surface, to a second field gate.  From here the path runs along the edge of a long field, with a ditch immediately to the left, and ends at a substantial bridge across the River Perry.  Distance about 1250 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 16                                                                                                384268/385273

From a metalled road leading to Top Farm, Henbarns, the path starts at a stepboard in a fence just before a metal gate across the driveway to the farm.  It goes across a pasture field to a stile in the top left-hand corner.  The path then turns sharply to the left, crosses a bridge over a ditch and goes across a cultivated field towards a Waymarker post to end at the junction with FP 15.  Distance about 550 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 18                                                                                                378259/384263

From a field gate by the road near to Lane End House, Henbarns, the path runs along a clear track across a cultivated field to a stile by the railway line.  It crosses the railway line to another stile and continues across a cultivated field to a further stile.  It then crosses a field with a *brook running through the middle of it to another stile.  It then crosses the parish boundary for a few metres and goes along the edge of a cultivated field to a stile.  It ends at this stile close to the parish boundary (connecting with FP 7 Ruyton Parish).  Distance about 650 metres.

* There is at present no bridge over the brook along the line of the path and the brook is difficult to negotiate.  The County Council has been informed of this.  There is a bridge across the brook, higher up to the right, designed to take agricultural vehicles.

FOOTPATH NO. 19                                                                                                373262/375269

From the road on Tedsmore Bank the path runs along a stoned and earth driveway to 'Cefn-y-wern' and through a field gate.  It continues along a track between farm buildings and through another field gate.  It then crosses a pasture field to the top right-hand corner to a stepboard in a fence and through a field gate.  It then crosses over a fairly wide *timber bridge.  It continues across pasture to a field gate and then to a stile by the railway line.  It crosses over the railway line to a second stile and on along the edge of a small pasture field to finish at a stepboard in a fence by the road near to Tedsmore Farm, Haughton.  Distance about 740 metres.

* The bridge is in a dangerous condition, with only one or two sound timbers left.  The County Council has been informed of this.

FOOTPATH NO. 41*                                                                                              319243/315231

From a field gate by the B4396 at its junction with Whip Lane the path goes straight for about 120 metres before turning slightly to the right.  It crosses four cultivated fields, but its route from one field to the next is obstructed by a hedge and a wire-mesh/barbed-wire fence.  It ends at a field gate by the road near to a bungalow, 'Highlands' at the top of Woolston Bank.

(The remainder of this footpath is in the parish of Oswestry Rural, although it still has the West Felton number applied to it.  The whole route, and the line on the definitive map, has been disputed.  The 'correct' route and line follows immediately below.)

The correct route for this path is currently being examined by the County Council.

FOOTPATH NO NUMBER WEST FELTON/OSWESTRY RURAL*                 319243/315231

The following path has been suggested by the County Council for the 'correct' route and line for FP 41 (West Felton).  It starts off in the parish of Oswestry Rural and follows the course of the river Morda.  The river forms one of the boundaries between Oswestry Rural and West Felton parishes, and most of this route lies within West Felton.  As there is no definitive line marked on the map for this route most of the line followed is conjectural.

From a stile by the road at Woolston Bank (Oswestry Rural parish), nearly opposite to Lower House Farm, the path follows the bank of the river Morda (to the right) for most of the way.  Shortly after the second stile the path crosses the parish boundary and enters West Felton parish.  It then passes a fenced pond to the left to a stile and goes over a makeshift bridge into a small wood.  It keeps to the left-hand edge of the wood to another stile and from there follows the edge of a cultivated field to a stile.  This stile leads into a second wood, with marshy ground towards the river bank.  It leaves this wood by a stile and continues to follow the river through trees and marshy ground.  It ends at a stile by the road (B4396) at Morton Bridge.

This is a beautiful route, following the Morda for most of its length, where occasionally kingfishers can be seen and unconfirmed reports of a dipper as well.  Unfortunately, there are several obstructions (mainly in the woods) along the way and the correct line of the path is not clear.  Until the Unitary Council makes a decision on this, the path should be used, if at all, with caution.

FOOTPATH NO. 42                                                                                                324243/329242

From a stile on the road between Woolston House and Whip Lane the path goes fairly straight across a cultivated field towards conifers and a bungalow.  It then follows a hedge (predominantly holly) to a stile.  From there it crosses a small plot of rough ground to a gap in a wire fence.  It goes on down a stone and earth track (now tarmaced) between houses to end at the road at Moorside.  Distance about 580 metres.

BRIDLEWAY NO. 43                                                                                              329246/329242

Just past the houses at Moorside the bridleway starts along an earth and stoned track.  It then passes through a field gate and crosses boggy pasture.  Just beyond the field gate is a wooden railing fence which obstructs the definitive line.  A short diversion takes you to the end of the fence.  The way curves to the right and then to the left, passing the end of a fenced ditch to a bridleway gate alongside a field gate in the top right-hand corner of the field.  The way then turns to the left for a short distance (approximately 80 metres) to end at another bridleway gate on Woolston Road, near to New House.  Distance about 500 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 44                                                                                                329241/334237

From a stile on the road between Sandford Hall and Whip Lane, to the left of double field gates, the path runs at an angle of about 35 degrees to the left across a cultivated field.  It continues to a stile and then across a small, boggy pasture field to end at a field gate by the road at Moorside.  Distance about 450 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 45                                                                                                337238/329234

From a stile on the road near to Sandford Hall the path goes at an angle of about 45 degrees to the right across a pasture field to a stile near to the top right-hand corner.  It then crosses a cultivated field to a stile near aeroplane hangars.  The path continues across a grass air strip and a cultivated field and ends at a field gate on Whip Lane.  Distance about 900 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 46                                                                                                337238/336233

From a stile on the road near to Sandford Hall the path goes across pasture and through a field gate.  It continues across a cultivated field to a stile, and then crosses a grass air strip and a cultivated field to a stile.  The path ends about 50 metres inside the next field at the Parish boundary (connecting with FP 4 Knockin Parish).  Distance about 500 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 47 (continuous with FPs 50 and 78)                                            336237/336243

From a stile on the road near to Sandford Hall (on the Woolston side) the path goes straight across a cultivated field.  It goes through a gap into a wood and continues through the wood, ending at a stream with a bridge over it where it connects with FP 50.  Distance about 500 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 48                                                                                                336233/343236

From a stile on the road opposite to High House, Sandford, the path goes at an angle of about 45 degrees to the right across pasture to the corner of a timber fence.  It then follows alongside a wire fence to a stepboard in railings.  The path continues across a field to a stile.  It continues in a straight line, closely following the edge of a wood.  A stile leads into the wood where the path goes down a fairly steep slope to a bridge (beam and sleepers) crossing a brook.  It ends at the Parish boundary of the brook (connecting with FP 5 Knockin Parish).  Distance about 1000 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 50 (continuous with FPs 47 and 78)                                            336243/337246

From the junction with FP 47 the path starts off in a fairly straight line across marshy ground towards a gap between two fields.  At the gap it turns 45 degrees to the right and goes through another gap to end at a field gate and stile on Lythwell Lane.  Distance about 300 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 51                                                                                                342267/343268

From a stile by a field gate on Twyford Lane, opposite to 'The Fords' farm, the path runs slightly to the left across one cultivated field.  It ends at a stile on the B5009.  Signpost on B5009 fallen down.  Distance about 100 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 52                                                                                                337266/342267

From a stile on the B5009, just below a milestone at Queens Head, the path runs straight across a cultivated field to a stile and then down a steep embankment to the A5 Trunk road.  It goes up a steep embankment (slightly further to the right) on the opposite side of the A5 to a stile and across another cultivated field to a further stile.  The path continues through an overgrown enclosure, formerly the grounds and orchard of an abandoned cottage, and across a small pasture field.  It then goes over a bridge, with a stile at the end of it, where it finishes on the Canal towpath near to Aston Locks.  Distance about 475 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 53*                                                                                              342267/337265

From a point on the B5009 near to 'The Laurels', Queens Head, the road runs along a stoned and earth track to a stile with a metal gate to the right.  It continues along a stoned and grass track, hedged on both sides and much overgrown, to a second gate.  It then turns to the right to a stile and then up a steep embankment to the A5 Trunk road.  The road continues on the opposite side of the A5, slightly to the right, down a steep embankment to a stile.  It continues straight for a while, still hedged and much overgrown, before gradually turning (almost 90 degrees) to the left to end at the junction with FP 52.  Distance about 425 metres.

At one time this path (previously a RUPP) will have served as access to two cottages (now pulled/fallen down) near to Aston Locks.  It is very overgrown and has numerous obstructions along the way.  As FP 52 is close by and follows in the same general direction, this FP does not really serve any useful purpose any more.

FOOTPATH NO. 54                                                                                                345264/348262

From a field gate on Twyford Lane opposite to an electricity sub-station the path goes at an angle of about 45 degrees to the right across a cultivated field with marshy ground on the far side of it towards a stile.  The path then turns slightly more to the right and continues across a small pasture field to a wicket gate.  From here it follows the boundary of White Cottage to finish at the junction with BW 55 at Twyford.  Distance about 360 metres.

BRIDLEWAY NO. 55                                                                                              349264/349263

A circular route which runs from its junction with FP 56 up a concrete track, approximately 3 metres wide, hedged on both sides, through a metal field gate by 'The Twyfords'.  It continues along a metalled road past 'The Twyfords' and then turns right towards Twyford House.  Just before reaching the wall of Twyford House it turns right again to go along a stone and earth track.  It turns once more right along an earth and stoned track, deeply rutted, to pass Twyford Farm before rejoining itself opposite to 'The Twyfords'.  Signposted by the wall to Twyford House.  Distance about 500 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 56 (continuous with FP 40)                                                          351277/350277

The path runs from a substantial footbridge (junction with FP 40) across a cultivated field at a slight angle to the left.  It goes over a stile and across a second cultivated field to a second stile in front of a gap.  The path continues across marshy pasture to a fairly wide bridge over a ditch, which is closed off at both ends by metal field gates.  It then runs to the top left-hand corner of the next pasture field and over a bridge (ditch) with a stile at both ends of it.  The path then follows the field edge (pasture).  It crosses another stile and continues along the field edge (pasture) to a final stile just before it ends at a gateway by a concrete lane (junction with BW 55).  Distance about 1050 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 56A                                                                                             349264/352273

From a point on Rednal Road near to Heath Houses the path goes over a road bridge over the canal and along a stoned and earth drive to a stile.  It then goes along the edge of a cultivated field to end at the Parish boundary (connecting with FP 82 Oswestry Rural).  Distance about 110 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 57                                                                                                343263/345263

From a stile on Twyford Lane, just past the junction to Twyford (Queens Head side), the path runs across a cultivated field at an angle to the right to a stile by a holly tree.  It then turns left along the edge of the next cultivated field and ends at a stile on the B5009.  Distance about 280 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 58 (continuous with FPs 24 and 33)                                            352263/349263

From a stile on a concrete track (BW 55), near to outbuildings of 'The Twyfords', the path runs along the edge of a pasture field to another stile.  It continues field-edge to end at a third stile where it connects with FP 33.  Not signposted from the track.  Distance about 250 metres.

FOOTPATH NO. 59*                                                                                              342254/343263

From a stile on the B5009 the path goes at an angle of about 45 degrees to the left across a cultivated field to a second stile.  It goes down steps cut into a steep embankment at the side of the A5 Trunk road.  It continues on the opposite side of the A5 up a steep embankment to a stile and then crosses another cultivated field, skirting to the left of a pond to a stile.  From here the path turns more to the left and goes across cultivated and pasture fields.  The line of the path from the last stile is not very clear and is obstructed along the route by a hedge and a fence.  It appears to end at a field gate at the junction with BWs 60 and 61, close to the old Mill, West Felton.  Not signposted from the road.  Distance about 830 metres.

It is not advisable to try and follow this line, even though it is the definitive line, as the line is obstructed in places.  The County Council, in the early 1980s, changed the route of this path but have been unable to amend the definitive map due to one or more of the landholders not being identifiable.  The changed route starts at the stile to the left of the pond.  Instead of going straight ahead turn right and follow the field edge.  At the end of this field there is a stile across from the pheasant rearing pens.  Once over the stile turn left along a track, overgrown and deeply rutted in places.  This brings you to BW 60.

BRIDLEWAY NO. 60 (continuous with BW 61 and FP 60)

Starts at the junctions with BW 61 and FP 59 (definitive line) and goes for a distance of approximately 250 metres when it connects with FP 60.  The way has a stoned and mud surface, deeply rutted, which is flooded to a depth of 15 inches (38 centimetres) or more for some of the year.  It is generally possible to negotiate the flooded sections by walking along the edge of the way.

FOOTPATH NO. 60 (continuous with BWs 60 and 61)                                          332260/342254

From the Canal towpath at Aston Locks the path goes down a small embankment and over a bridge, with a stile at one end and a kissing gate at the other, and then travels in a fairly straight line.  It crosses marshy ground along a clear trail through the marsh to a second kissing gate.  It then goes across a small pasture field to another kissing gate and along the grounds of a nearby house, 'Cupid's Ramble', with a hedge immediately to the right, to a kissing gate by the roadside.  From a stile, on the opposite side of the road, the direction of the path turns roughly 45 degrees to the left.  It crosses pasture to a field gate in the top left-hand corner of the field.  It then goes across another pasture field to a stile.  From here the path turns left again and goes across a cultivated field to end at a gate at the junction with BW 60.  Distance about 950 metres.
