Adding links to you webpages

There are a number of ways to insert a link into your webpage. The easiest method is to simply type out the website address directly into your webpage text area; such as http://www.shropshire.gov.uk.

The link should be immediately recognised and appear underlined (though the link will not actually become clickable until after the page has been 'PUBLISHED').

Note: If you are adding a link in this way don't forget to add the http:// before the www.

This method is not always the best way to add a link to your webpage. Some websites do not have an easily recognisable web address. In this case it may not be clear to your visitors why you have added the link to your webpage or where clicking on the link may take them to!

Another way of adding a link to your webpage is to type the name of the organisation into your webpage text area, highlight this text and click on he 'Insert hyperlink' button. A new dialogue box should open and you should be offered the following choices:

This option allows you to add a link to another webiste. Select   Next  and complete the following text entry fields:

  • URL = this is the address of the website that you wish to provide a link to (not forgetting to include the http:// before the www.)
  • Title = this is the name of the website that you wish to provide a link to.
  • Open in new window - Sometimes you may wish to have a new internet window open when a user clicks on this link on your webpage. This option should be used sparingly as it can confuse users and cause problems for those accessing your website using magnifiers or screen readers.

This allows you to provide links to another webpage within your mini-site. Click on this option and select 
 Next . You should now be able to see your mini-site structure in the 'Insert hyperlink' box (shown below):

Navigate through your mini-site structure until you reach the webpage that you wish to link to. Click on the page and if you are happy that you have selected the correct page click on   Next , or  Back , to return to the previous menu, or  Cancel  to exit the process and close the 'Insert hyperlink' box.

Note: you may need to scroll down to the bottom of the 'Insert hyperlink' box to locate thse options

If you have selected  Next  you will be asked to complete the following text entry fields:

  • URL = This field should already be completed for you and will show the link of your website page that you wish to provide a link to. 
  • Title = this is the name of the webpage that you wish to provide a link to.
  • Open in new window - Sometimes you may wish to have a new internet window open when a user clicks on this link on your webpage. This option should be used sparingly as it can confuse users and cause problems for those accessing your website using magnifiers or screen readers.

Click on  Finish  to complete the linking process,  Back  to retun to the prevous options or  Cancel  to exit the process and close the 'Insert hyperlink' box.

Adding an email address

Normally when you type an email address into the free text area of your webpage the address will be automatically recognised by the system and presented as a link.

If for any reason this is not the case highlight the email address and use the 'an email address' option from the opening dialogue box. Select next and complete the 'Mail to' with the email address that you wish to publish.

Click on  Finish  to complete the linking process,  Back  to retun to the prevous options or  Cancel  to exit the process and close the 'Insert hyperlink' box.

The link should be immediately recognised and appear underlined (though the link will not actually become clickable until after the page has been 'PUBLISHED').
