Water polo is an established sport played throughout the world but it has a long history which began in England. The first documented evidence of the game was when the Bournemouth Premier Rowing Club carried out the 'first series' of aquatic handball matches' on 13 July 1876.

The Club competes in the Midland League between March and October and the Wrekin & District League during the winter.

Based at the Newport Swimming Pool in Victoria Park, the Club is currently the only competitive water polo club in Shropshire.

Newport Water Polo Club has participated in this exciting team game since 1974 and is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association.
