goes up

again

Work is under way to re-erect the long-lost headframe of the Snailbeach Mine's famous Black Tom Shaft.  This picture was taken on November 12 2011.

George's Shaft headframe was re-erected some years ago.

Black Tom was 120ft deepto the 40-yard level but is now capped. It was sunk before the 1820s and was worked for barite and galena up to 1928.

The Village Hall became the operations centre as a dramatic rescue took place at Snailbeach Mine on the night of November16/17 2011.  A 24-year-old Devon woman had become trapped 300ft underground after suffering an epileptic fit. A Midlands Cave Rescue team of 51 volunteers travelled from across the Midlands to answer the rescue alarm.  The woman was brought safely to the surface.

 Crisis at Snailbeach Pool

Empty Pool Sep 30 2011

September 30 2011...and this is the sad state of Snailbeach Pool, empty of water except for a small pool at the mine end. This can be seen (right) behind a bathtub exposed by the receding water and (below) surrounded by dead fish. Immediate closure of the Pool and of the angling club was announced on September 17 by Roger Leech, chairman of the Friends of Snailbeach Pool Angling Club, reporting a continuing drop in water levels for two years.  A major leak has been suspected and reservoir engineers suspect that a second feed pipe to the old valve house has corroded and might have caused some of the problems. Mr Leech said that a considerable time would be needed to solve the problem and the pool might have to be reclayed. Long-term water feed also needed to be assured.  Meanwhile the majority of the remaining fish had been netted and taken to a council quarantine pool.  Separately, Sir John Roberts, of the Shropshire Anglers Association, called for a Village Hall meeting to research finding water supplies via ditches and springs before trying to find funding to channel them. But restocking was "not on the horizon."
